Press Releases and Summer and Calli News

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo debuted two new popular additions to its Beaver Valley section on Wednesday, May, 3– Calli and Summer, two 10-month-old Californian sea lions. Biologist Linda Moore (left) and Keeper Laura Mathieson (right) target train the two female pups, having them touch their nose to the end of a pole for a fish reward. This is the initial step in their training that will help keepers manage the two feisty sea lions as they grow. The young sea lions were met with applause and cheers from Zoo visitors waiting for the pups to come out. Calli and Summer will share the exhibit with the National Zoo’s 29-year-old California sea lion, Maureen.
