Volunteering: Animal Care

As a non-profit organization, our volunteers are the backbone of our operation.  Each year our Animal Care and Education volunteers commit over 25,000 hours to the care of our patients, the maintenance of our facilities and the education of our community. 

Animal care duties consist of laundry, dishes, cleaning pens, preparing fish for meals, feeding, weighing animals, assisting with medical procedures, rescues and releases. 

To volunteer at PMMC, you must be 18 years of age or older and willing to commit to one half-day shift per week for a minimum of one year.  Morning and afternoon shifts are based on our patients’ needs and are a minimum of four hours per shift.  During our busy season (March through August) we have more patients in-house and our animal care work load increases significantly.  During these busy months, animal care shifts are more demanding and each shift can last a minimum of six to seven hours.
