The Story of Munchkin

donate now!

Munchkin, a 1-2 month old Northern fur seal pup, was rescued by PMMC on May 4th 2006. She became healthier each day. Shown below are some snapshots of her grooming her fur while floating comfortably in one of the center's pools. Grooming is a common activity for fur seals.

Munchkins' Journey Home August 2006

Munchkin joined two Guadalupe fur seals from Fort MacArthur Marine Mammal Care Center on August 9th 2006 for a trip to Sea World in San Diego. They joined two more fur seals that were in Sea World’s care for preparation for their journey to San Miguel Island. A number of the fur seals were satellite tagged to help researchers track the animals. We were excited about this joint effort with Sea World and Fort Mac to release these special animals near a fur seal colony!

Munchkin makes a new friend

Munchkin is currently located just northwest of Pt. Reyes near San Francisco. The tracking image from September 27, 2006 shows her location. She is number 65759 shown with other animals whose migration is being tracked by the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.

We will keep you posted on Munchkin’s adventure....

Update: June 2008 - The satellite tags are put on with an epoxy material that holds for only about a year or so and then the tag drops off. Munchkin is no longer being tracked now. We continue to hope for the best for her and wish her well...
