Up cycled Single Use Plastic Projects
Plastics accumulating in our oceans and on our beaches has become a global crisis. Billions of pounds of plastic are swirling around in our oceans. At current rates, the ocean will have more plastic than fish by 2050. Plastic pollution has a direct and deadly effect on wildlife. Thousands of seabirds, sea turtles, seals and other marine mammals are killed each year after ingesting plastic or getting entangled in it.
Plastic Pollution Solution Challenge:
Prototype: RUMBA or Remove Unwanted Material Before Accumulating
How does it work: Removes debris from beaches and streets.
Potential Partners: Amazon, I robot, Waste Management, Boston Dynamics.
How to improve: Create an app, make it submersible or sonar, design to look like marine mammals.
Problems/issues: Capacity Limitations.
Prototype: Trash Troll Boat
How does it work: Boat has a rash capturing mechanism that can be raised and lowered into the water into the water to capture trash.
Potential Partners: Tesla, Recycling, Coastguard, ACME, Solar/battery power, marine rescues.
How to improve: Add a large trap cage or net to hold the trash. Any animals/ fish would be released back, warning mechanism to detect fish and mammals.
Problems/issues: Capturing something not trash such as fish and plants.
Prototype: P.A.C 4,000 - Paddle Attachment Collection
How does it work: Wheel collects and filters trash from the ocean in a repository that can be attached to the front of any boat.
Potential Partners: Yacht clubs, fishing fleets, cruise lines/eco-tourism, shipping lines.
How to improve: Partner with companies who will use the collected materials and re-purpose them into reusable items.
Problems/issues: Animal entrapment or injury which is why we are building in specific openings/filters to help prevent entrapment.
