Veterinary Externships


 

PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL VETERINARY STUDENT EXTERNSHIP 2020

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues, rehabilitates, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research, education, and collaboration. As part of our mission of education, the pacific marine mammal center is offering a veterinary student externship program to veterinary students in their final year of schooling (4th year or final clinical year) the opportunity to gain experience in marine mammal medicine, rehabilitation, husbandry and necropsy.

The student extern will work under the direct supervision of the veterinarian, animal care staff, and volunteers. The student will participate in animal husbandry (cleaning pens, preparing diets, restraining animals, and/or tubing emaciated animals), veterinary examination and diagnostic procedures, anesthetic procedures, recordkeeping, and necropsies. The student will also complete a power point presentation during their externship and present the results to staff and volunteers during the last week of their rotation. The externship is open to all US and International students.

The veterinary externship is an unpaid position, and is ONLY OPEN TO STUDENTS WHO WILL BE IN THEIR FINAL/CLINICAL YEAR OF VETERINARY SCHOOL at the time of the externship.

Applications for externships between (approximately) February 1st - August 1st 2020, are now open. Students will be scheduled for a 4 week block during this period of time.

Housing and transportation to and from the externship is the students’ responsibility.

Priority for preferred externship dates is determined according to rank during the selection process. Ranking is based on the above criteria, AND a demonstrated interest in marine mammal medicine.

Applications for 2020 are DUE NO LATER THAN MONDAY, DECEMBER 30th, 2019. Students will be notified of their acceptance into the 2020 program by January 13th 2020.

If qualified, applicants should submit the following materials, As a PDF and saved with the applicants’ name. All application materials should be submitted by e-mail.

1. A letter of intent/cover letter, INCLUDING 3 blocks of 4-week long preferred dates (if the student schedule is completely open for several months, please indicate that as well)

2. A letter of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant's academic and/or clinical performance (these can be submitted directly from the writer)

3. A current curriculum vitae.
