Ocean Explorers is a science and conservation-based program designed to build awareness and interest in the marine environment, creatures that call it home, and science careers. This 4-week program introduces children to a diversity of marine mammals, their adaptations, and what they do to make a living under the sea. This program is hosted by enthusiastic and engaging instructors who lead your children through live chats, videos, presentations, interactive activities, and/or crafts. No parent assistance is needed as this program comes with a kit that includes supplies needed for the program.

Grades 9-12

The Youth Action Council is a free, 5-month leadership program for high school students who wish to share their passion for marine science while also making a positive impact in their community on behalf of the ocean. The program brings groups of teens together from San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties to discuss a synergy of human impacts that are contributing to the decline of endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Students learn about cutting-edge science being used to assist in the recovery of these animals and participate in simulations to experience field techniques. The program concludes with youth-driven initiatives to raise awareness of these conservation issues in their communities and how people in Southern California can help. This program is a collaboration of PMMC, the National Marine Mammal Foundation, and MMCCLA with funding provided by NOAA and the Species in the Spotlight program.

Ocean Heroes is an after-school science program designed for children ages 8-12. Children will engage in marine science and conservation topics, hands-on activities, games, crafts, and optional offsite stewardship projects. Over the course of the program your kiddos will learn about marine mammals, the ecosystems in which they reside, and threats these animals currently face in the wild. With the support of enthusiastic instructors, students will put their problem-solving skills to the test engaging in innovative STEAM projects exploring solutions and becoming ocean stewards!

RETURNING SUMMER 2025

Camp Pinniped allows kids to explore the world of marine mammals and marine science through our mission of rescue, rehabilitation, release and research. Children hear the stories of our patients and witness their recovery. Games, hands on activities, experiments, crafts and discussions lead them to discover the need for conservation and ocean stewardship. Our team of enthusiastic educators help mentor and inspire campers throughout the week.

Ages 15-17 | Mon-Fri (1 Week) 8AM-2PM | $500

This small group experience allows older teens to explore different aspects of marine mammal science. Teens gain hands-on experience in animal husbandry while they work side by side with our rescue and rehabilitation team. Participants shadow our veterinarian on patient rounds and hear about current and past case studies. PMMC scientists teach the group about the physiology, population ecology, behavior and conservation of marine mammals. Teens participate in activities that are a part of PMMC’s ongoing research investigations. On the last day, the group goes out in the field with our researchers to conduct marine mammal observations to learn about research methods and techniques our scientists use to collect data.
