Learn with us
Scouts investigate the world of marine mammals through a variety of programs focused on exploring the natural world, animal adaptations, conservation and caring for the planet. Each experience includes a tour of the center to view and hear stories about current patients.
Every program teaches about human impact on marine habitats and inspires participants to take action through ocean stewardship and advocacy.

-
Daisies | Group Size: 8-15 scouts | 90 minutes | $15/scout
Meets all badge requirements.
Scouts will have the opportunity to observe wild marine mammal patients at PMMC, hear their stories, and record their observations about their behavior. Scouts will explore different types of marine mammals, the sounds they make, and why they are important and go on to play an ocean-themed game of charades. The experience concludes with a discussion about human impact on marine mammal health, and explore how each of us can actively make a difference to support a healthy ocean.
-
Brownies | Group Size: 8-15 scouts | 2 hours | $15/scout
Meets all badge requirements.
Scouts explore the impact of plastic pollution on marine life and ultimately humans. Scouts will hear the stories of different marine mammal patients impacted by pollution and rehabilitated at PMMC and use that information to create a poster, short video, or persuasive letter to a locally elected official.
-
Juniors | Group Size: 8-15 scouts | 2 hours | $15/scout
Meets all badge requirements except step 5. See more at the link.
Scouts will learn about marine mammal anatomy and how that plays a role in their habitat selection. Scouts will then create their own marine mammal species and discuss the habitat it lives in based on their design. They go on to explore the extensive habitat of baleen whales through a whale migration game followed by a discussion on how humans impact the health of marine mammals and the ocean and daily stewardship activities they can adopt and share with others that make a difference, including using their voice to make change in the community.
-
Cadettes | Group size: 8-15 scouts | 2 hours | $15/scout
Meets all badge requirements except step 4 (beach cleanup).
Scouts explore concepts around the effects of ocean pollution and fishery entanglement on marine mammals. Scouts discover how conservationists are tackling these problems, what daily practices can contribute to a safer, healthier ocean and the importance of supporting sustainable seafood efforts. Scouts will then take action to use their voice and creativity to share this information with others by either designing a poster or writing a letter to a locally elected official or company about change they wish to see to support a healthier ocean. After the program, scouts can travel down the road to Laguna beach to complete step 4 by conducting a beach clean-up on their own to complete this badge.
